There are even more opportunities for students this year, as Grand Island Senior High will offer high school girls and boys bowling and girls wrestling.

Grand Island Public Schools approved the implementation of both high school bowling and girls wrestling on August 30, 2021.

“We are moving forward with our Long Range Plan for Extracurricular Excellence, which brought forward a number of community members, staff members and students,” Dr. Tawana Grover, GIPS Superintendent said. “Providing additional opportunities and options is something we want to honor in that plan.”

The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) sanctioned high school girls and boys bowling in May 2020. Due to the pandemic, Grand Island Senior High decided to wait a year to implement the sport.

The NSAA sanctioned girls wrestling in May 2021.

“We are excited that both of these NSAA sports have been approved and implemented,” GISH Activities Director Cindy Wells said. “This will give high school students another opportunity to participate, compete and earn college scholarships,” Wells said.

Grover said with girls wrestling in particular, a group of students initiated the conversation of bringing the sport to GISH.

“We are creating a culture where student voices are impacting change and increasing opportunities,” Dr. Grover said.

Wells said there is already a high interest in both sports.

Coaches Jeff Evans and Christy Dubbs will lead the GISH girls wrestling program. Wells said Coaches Paul Lee and Brad Earnest, who are currently the Club Bowling Coaches at Westside Lanes, will lead the GISH bowling program. Wells said the coaches are very excited to get these sports started at GISH.

“We thank our coaches for taking on these roles to allow students to build skills and showcase their talents,” Dr. Grover said. “Thank you to our parents and the community for the support with these two exciting athletic opportunities. We can’t wait to see these Islanders in action,” Dr. Grover said.

Practice for both bowling and girls wrestling begins November 15, 2021.
