Baseball Completes Sweep with 12-2 Win Over Butler
Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball moved into sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST with a 12-2 win over Butler in eight innings, completing the three-game sweep of the Bulldogs on Sunday, April 26. Creighton climbed to 25-16 with the win on the season and 10-2 in BIG EAST action. Butler fell to 15-28 overall and 5-7 in conference contests.
Butler jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame as Danny Gavin bounced a single up the middle, then Matthew Rhoades connected for his 19th home run of the season over the wall in left center. Gavin Gilmore followed with a single through the left side, taking second on a wild pitch and stealing third. Bluejay starter Wilson Magers slammed the door on the Bulldogs by stranding Gilmore at third with a strikeouts surrounding a soft liner to first.
Creighton responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning as Ben North launched his eighth home run of the season to left-center.
The Bluejays pulled even with a run in the fourth, taking advantage of four walks to knot the game at 2-2.
A three-run fifth gave Creighton a 5-2 edge as getting a leadoff single from Lew Rice, two one-out walks, an RBI single from Connor Capece and a sac fly from Isaac Wachsmann. The third run crossed on a Butler wild pitch.
The Bluejays pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, then ended the game via run-rule with five runs in the eighth.
After giving up two runs on three hits in the first inning, Magers responded with six innings to earn his second win (2-0) of the year. He allowed just one hit and one walk over his final five frames. Butler reliever Jake Thomas took the loss (0-6), allowing four runs on one hit and six walks in 1.2 innings.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 28 in the Bluejays' annual Kids Day at 11:00 am against North Dakota State.
