Cincinnati, Ohio -- After taking the series opener at Great American Ballpark, Creighton Baseball fell in the regular season finale at Xavier, 5-3, on Saturday, May 16. The loss dropped Creighton to 29-24 on the season and 13-8 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier earned a share of the BIG EAST regular season title moving to 26-28 overall and 15-6 in league action.
Creighton and Xavier both move on to the BIG EAST Championship in Mason, Ohio starting on Wednesday, May 20. Creighton enters as the No. 4 seed and will face St. John's at 2:30 pm in a game broadcast on ESPN+. Xavier is the No. 3 seed and will face Connecticut at 6:30 pm.
For the second straight game the Bluejays jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Isaac Wachsmann hit his third home run in two games, this time connecting to left-center.
Creighton's bats, however, went cold as the Bluejays next hit didn't come until the sixth. Xavier took advantage with four runs in the third and one in the fourth to build a 5-1 edge. The Musketeers scored on an RBI single from Clay Burdette and pushed across three unearned runs courtesy of a Bluejay error. The Xavier tally in the fourth crossed on a wild pitch.
The Bluejays refused to quit, loading the bases in the ninth on two-out singles from Connor Capece and Chris Baillargeon as well as a walk to Rocco Gump. Pinch hitter Cooper Fuchino worked a 3-1 court, then laced a two-run single through the left side. Creighton's rally, however, came up short.
Creighton reliever Jimmy Burke was saddled with the loss (2-1), allowing two runs on two walks to open the third. Xavier's Evan Vasiliou (2-2) earned the win with five innings of one-run ball. Musketeer Owen Poole got the final out to nab his third save of the season.
