Bluejay Baseball Takes Series Opener 6-2 Over Sacramento State
Omaha, Neb. -- Powered by homers from Teddy Deters and Ben North, Creighton Baseball took the series opener from Sacramento State 6-2 on Friday, March 27. The win lifted the Bluejays to 12-11 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 10-17.
Sacramento State surged ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the third, taking advantage of a wild pitch on a strikeout as well as an errant throw to plate the first run. The Hornets used consecutive sacrifice bunts to take a 2-0 edge.
Creighton responded immediately as Rocco Gump drew a one-out walk, stole second and scampered around to score on an RBI single from Joe Washburn. Deters followed with his first home run of the season, blasting his third home run of the season to give the Bluejays a 3-2 edge.
North extended Creighton's lead to 4-2 with a solo home run to left in the fourth, then Deters lined a two-run double off the glove of Hornet third baseman Jacob Poturnak down the left field line.
Bluejay starter Jack Pineau earned the win, limiting the Hornets to a pair of unearned runs in seven innings. While Bluejay reliever Jimmy Burke tossed a pair of scoreless frames to close out the win.
Sac State starter Carson Timothy surrendered four runs on three hits in four innings to fall to 2-2 on the season.
Creighton and Sacramento State return to Charles Schwab Field on Saturday, March 28 for the second game of the series at 2:00 pm.
