Bluejay Baseball Walks Off Hornets with Three-Run Ninth to Win, 4-3
Omaha, Neb. -- Trailing 3-1 entering the final frame, Creighton Baseball walked off a winner on freshman Nick Bowron's RBI single to defeat Sacramento State 4-3 on Sunday, March 29. The victory gave Creighton the series win and pushed the Bluejays to 13-12 on the season. Sacramento State, meanwhile, fell to 11-18 overall.
Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Isaac Wachsmann drew a one-out walk and Connor Capece was hit by a pitch. Bowron followed with an RBI single to right, one of just two singles the Bluejay offense delivered through eight innings.
Sacramento State responded with a pair of unearned runs in the third. With two down in the frame, the Hornets put two men on with a single from Sam Harry and an error that allowed Erick Dessens to reach. Luis Pimentel-Guerrero followed with a two-run double the short hopped the glove as Chris Baillargeon dove for the ball in left.
The Hornets added an insurance run in the as Pimentel-Guerrero laced an RBI single to drive in Harry for the second time in the contest.
Creighton's ninth inning began with Teddy Deters reaching on a hit-by-pitch, one out later Ben North walked. Wachsmann cashed in the opportunity by bouncing a single through the left side that just eluded two Sacramento State defenders to put Bluejays at the corners and bring Creighton within a run at 3-2. Capece followed with a sac fly to left to knot the game at 3-3. Wachsman got himself in scoring position with a stolen base, then Bowron lined a single to right to give Creighton the walk off win.
Bluejay closer Matt Goldenbaum recorded the final five outs to earn the win (2-1), while Hornet reliever Trevor Wilson took the loss (1-4). Wilson was flawless for four innings, but allowed three runs on a hit batter, a walk and two runs in the ninth.
Creighton completes its season-long six-game homestand on Tuesday, March 31 against Nebraska at 6:00 pm in Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
