Bluejay Women's Basketball Falls to #1 UConn, 94-44

Storrs, Conn. -- Creighton Women's Basketball suffered a 94-44 loss to #1 UConn on Wednesday, February 11. The loss moved Creighton to 12-13 on the season and 8-8 in BIG EAST contests, while UConn climbed to 26-0 overall and 15-0 in conference contests.

Battling vaunted pressure applied by UConn, Creighton held its own in the opening quarter with dead eye range beyond the arc. The Bluejays got treys from Neleigh Gessert, Kendall McGee and a pair from senior Kennedy Townsend. With under a minute remaining in the frame McGee dropped in Creighton's first two pointer to pull even at 14-14 (0:57). The Huskies, however, scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 19-14.

UConn's pressure took its toll in the second quarter as the Huskies scored 10 points on turnovers, including a steal and layup in the closing seconds of the first quarter. The result saw Connecticut push its lead to as much as 42-21, but another trey from Neleigh Gessert on Creighton final offensive possession sent the teams to halftime with a 42-24 contest.

The second half saw UConn shoot 20-for-31 (64.5%) as the Huskies outscored Creighton 52-20 over the final 20 minutes.

Elizabeth Gentry led the Bluejays with 12 points, her seventh double-digit performance of the season. Kennedy Townsend closed the game with 10 points.

Connecticut got a game-high 20 points Allie Ziebel, 19 from Azzi Fudd and 16 from Sarah Strong.

The Bluejays will return to action on Sunday, February 15 against Villanova. The game will be available on truTV with a scheduled start for 4:00 pm. Following the game with the Wildcats, Creighton seniors Grace Boffeli, Kiani Locket and Kennedy Townsend will be honored.
