Bluejay Women's Basketball Flies Away From Butler in Second Half for 63-52 Win

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Creighton stars Morgan Maly and Lauren Jensen dropped a combined 46 points to power Creighton Women's Basketball to a 63-52 win over Butler on Wednesday, January 22. The victory lifted Creighton to 16-3 on the season and 8-0 in BIG EAST play, while Butler dropped to 12-9, 2-5 BIG EAST).

Each team knocked down consecutive treys in the opening frame, Creighton struck first as the Bluejays first three buckets came from long range to build a 9-2 lead (6:35). Butler responded with a pair of its own treys to bring it back to a 9-8 contest. After a four-minute scoring draught for Creighton, senior Lauren Jensen delivered two of Creighton's three buckets at the close of the quartet to give the Bluejays a 15-10 edge.

The opening of the second stanza saw the squads trade 5-0 spurts that saw Butler pull even at 15-15and again at 20-20. Holding a slim 21-20 edge with 4:34 remaining in the first half, the Bluejays outscored the Bulldogs 10-2 down the stretch to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. 

Up 33-27 with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter, Creighton created some separation with seven straight points. Layups from Maly and Kennedy Townsend got. the Bluejays started, then Jensen pushed the Bluejays' edge to 40-27 with a trifecta from the corner.

Creighton's advantage grew to as much as 17 points at 54-37 midway through the fourth, but a final rush from the Bulldogs brought Butler back within seven at 54-47 with 3:03 remaining.  Maly calmly put the game away with five straight points, then Jensen drove in the final nail with her fifth trey of the game.

Maly led all scorers with 24 points, while Jensen finished with 22. Molly Mogensen rounded out the Bluejays in double figures with 11 points. Butler got 16 points from Sydney Jaynes and 15 points to go with 13 rebounds from Kilyn McGuff.

The Bluejays return to the court on Saturday, January 25 as Creighton hosts Connecticut on FOX in the Bluejays' annual Pink Out game to raise Breast Cancer awareness. The contest is schedule to tip at 4:30 p.m.
