Bygone Book Club February Meeting to Discuss Sod Houses

Grand Island, Neb. — The popular local history book club and discussion group Bygone Book Club will discuss Roger Welsch’s “Sod Walls” on Saturday, February 10 at 11 a.m. at the Grand Island Public Library in Meeting Room BC.

The sod house to the Plains is what the log house was to the eastern woodlands. Originally used to meet the severe conditions of the barren prairie, sod construction eventually became an efficient building technique. Indeed, its development made possible the eventual settlement of the vast Nebraska grasslands, long known as the American Desert.

The Bygone Book Club is a partnership between the Grand Island Public Library and the Hall County Historical Society. Local historians lead monthly discussions of books featuring Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska or regional history. Membership in the book club is monthly, and participants can choose which month/book is of interest to them and don’t need to commit to the entire program series.

The Grand Island Public Library serves both residents of the City of Grand Island and Hall County.
