Centurions down Wildcats in Hoops Action
With LouPlatte Conference Basketball around the corner, the St. Paul Wildcats hit the road for the short drive in Howard County to take on the Centura Centurions. Both games were exciting contests but ultimately the Cats fell short in both contests.
In the Girls Game, Centura jumped out to an early lead in the first before St. Paul closed the quarter out on a 7-2 run to take a 9-7 lead. Centura chipped away in the 2nd quarter and knotted the Contest up at 16 headed into the final 2 quarters. Centura took the lead late in the 3rd quarter on an Ella Rasmussen 3 that proved to be the difference in the 3rd edging St. Paul 7-6 to take a 23-22 lead. St. Paul got off to a hot start in the 4th with a Charlee Wegner 3 but wasn't able to muster up any late game heroics as Centura edged the Cats late 17-10 to win 40-32.
Charlee Wegner takes home Runza MVP with 15 points. The two teams will meet up again on Tuesday in the Quarterfinals of the LouPlatte Conference Tournament on Tuesday at 6pm in Centura.
The Boys game saw St. Paul jump out to an early 10-9 lead in the first. The Cats went cold offensively in the 2nd quarter going scoreless for 6:59 in the 2nd quarter before scoring 5 points in the final 1:01 to make it a 16-15 Centura lead at half. The home team doubled up the Cats in the 3rd quarter 16-8 to take a 32-23 lead into the 4th. St. Paul got within 5 late but Centura was able to hold on for the 44-38 win.
Gage Sack was a force downlow for the Wildcats tonight taking Runza MVP with 13 points. St. Paul will take on Doniphan-Trumbull in the LPC Tournament. DT defeated the Cats earlier this year 64-42.
If either St. Paul team advances to the Semifinals they can be heard live on Country 96.
