City of Hastings Celebrates Arbor Day

The City of Hastings Arbor Day program will start at 2:30 p.m. at Watson Elementary on Friday, April 24 at 1720 Crane Ave.

Volunteers will plant a Japanese lilac tree next to the school’s front entrance drop-off area.

Hastings Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hassenstab said when it comes to trees, his department is a resource for the community.

“The role we play is education about trees and how trees benefit the community and residents,” Hassenstab said. “If we can be a resource, we will do that.”

During the Arbor Day program, Parks and Recreation staff members will speak about the history of Arbor Day, the value of trees and proper tree care. A city proclamation will also be read for Arbor Day.

This year marks the 36th year that Hastings is a Tree City community. To receive Tree City recognition, a community must meet four standards:
1. Maintain a tree board or department
2. Have a community tree ordinance
3. Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
4. Celebrate Arbor Day
