Creighton Baseball Clinches Spot in BIG EAST Tournament with 9-5 Win Over Georgetown

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball clinched a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament with a 9-5 win over Georgetown on Saturday, May 9. The win lifted the Bluejays to 28-20 on the season and 12-5 in BIG EAST contests, while the Hoyas fell to 25-26 overall and 6-11 in conference action.

Creighton starter Jack Pineau earned the win (7-2) with five innings of one run ball. Reliever Joe Hauser closed out the game, notching the final four outs of the game.

Trailing 1-0 as the game moved to the fourth, Creighton seized the lead with two runs on four hits, Isaac Wachsmann opened the inning with a hard hit single to short, the Nate McHugh lined an RBI double to left center. Connor Capece reached with the second infield single and Teddy Deters bounced and RBI single up the middle to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead.

Creighton added two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to build a 7-1 edge. Deters delivered an RBI double, then Nick Venteicher lifted a sac fly in the sixth, then in the seventh Capece came through with an RBI single and Deters drove home his third and fourth runs of the contest with a single to center.

Georgetown countered with four runs in the eighth, but a two-run blast from Wachsmann in the eighth to put the game away.

The loss went to Georgetown starter JT Raab (2-5), as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 4.2 frames.

Creighton and Georgetown wrap up their three game series on Sunday, May 10 as the Bluejays celebrate 12 seniors before the 11 am contest.
