Creighton Baseball Drops Senior Day Rubber Game to Georgetown, 5-2
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball honored its seniors on Sunday, but the Bluejays lost the rubber game in their series against Georgetown by a 5-2 score.
The Hoyas scored in three of the first four innings against Bluejay starter Wilson Magers. Ashton Seymore's two-out single in the first made it 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
Creighton (28-21, 12-6 BIG EAST) got one back in the bottom of the first as Ben North was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second base, and score on an RBI double by Nate McHugh.
Georgetown (26-26, 7-11 BIG EAST) upped its lead with two runs in the second without the benefit of a hit, as one run would score on a wild pitch and another came home after CU tried to cut down a runner stealing second and the throw was too high. GU's run in the fourth also came when the Hoyas had runners on the corners and Travis Ilitch scored after CU threw out AJ Solomon trying to steal second with one out.
The Bluejays had chances in each of the last three innings. In the seventh CU had three men walk to load the bases, but a ground out helped the Hoyas escape. The Jays also had men on the corners with one out in the eighth before hitting into an inning-ending double play.
In the ninth inning Georgetown pitcher Griffin O'Connor walked Nick Venteicher, who moved to third base on Rocco Gump's single to right. Isaac Wachsmann then walked for the third time to load the bases. North drove home Venteicher with a sacrifice fly for the first out but O'Connor got McHugh and Connor Capece to fly out to end the game.
Magers fell to 2-1 this season and lost for the first time in six career decisions against a BIG EAST foe. He allowed five runs (one earned) in four innings of work, striking out five, before being lifted after 89 pitches. The CU offense managed a season-low three hits on the day, McHugh's double in the first inning, a single by Teddy Deters to open the second inning and a Rocco Gump single in the ninth inning.
Charlie Hendrix made the start for Georgetown and threw two innings before giving way to Max Whitmer, who threw three hitless frames to improve to 3-1. Overall seven Hoya hurlers combined to surrender 12 walks, but only Venteicher in the ninth inning would come around to score. GU's arms also hit two batters and threw three wild pitches.
Creighton hosts No. 25 Nebraska on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in its regular-season home finale, with a fireworks show planned for after the game.
