Creighton Baseball Falls to Omaha, 11-5

Creighton Bluejays

Omaha, Neb. -- A back-and-forth battle turned into a late-inning slugfest Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field, as Creighton rallied twice to tie the game but couldn't keep pace with Omaha's late offensive burst in an 11-5 loss. The loss dropped the Bluejays to 28-13 on the season, while the Mavericks advanced to 16-23 overall.

Omaha wasted no time getting on the board as Jackson Trout opened the game with a single up the middle. With only one out, Tyler Bishop put the Mavericks up 2-0 in the first inning with a home run to left field. Henry Prindl slammed the door on the Mavericks firing back-to-back strikeouts .

The Mavericks added one more in the third after three straight singles from Trout, Henry Zipay and Bishop, but Bluejay pitcher Noah Klein came in and hurled a strikeout stopping Omaha from scoring anymore.

Creighton turned on the offense in the third. Kyle Hess sparked the rally with a single, before swiping second and advanced to third on a ground out. Teddy Deters got the Bluejays on the board with an RBI single to right, later scoring as Nolan Sailors blooped an RBI double into shallow left to cut the deficit to 3-2.

After a scoreless fourth, the Bluejays evened it up in the fifth. Kyle Hess drew a walk to start the inning and advanced to third after Nick Venteicher's double. Tate Gillen lifted a sacrifice fly allowed Hess to cross the plate bringing the score to 3-3.

Omaha broke away from the Bluejays after the sixth inning. During the seventh, the Mavericks managed to put five runs on the board from three hits, and three walks. They kept their momentum rolling into the eighth inning with Palmer and Bishop each scoring another run on the day.

Creighton fought back in the eighth. Will MacLean drew a walk while Connor Capece and Nate McHugh were both struck by pitches to load the bases. Nick Venteicher hit a two-run single up the middle to cut the Maverick's lead in half before the end of the inning.

The Mavericks solidified their lead at the top of the ninth. Henry Zipay doubled through center field then advanced to third on a Bluejay error. Tyler Bishop's single through the right side brought in Zipay, putting the Mavericks at 11-5 before the inning ended. Three quick outs for the Bluejays would end the game and tie the series.

Shea Wendt suffered a loss (0-1), allowing two hits and four runs in an inning of work while Luke Gainer took the win (6-3) allowing nothing in an inning.

The Bluejays are back on the road this weekend for series at Butler starting on Friday, May 2nd at 2 p.m.
