Following the game the Bluejays shaved their heads as a team to support Cancer Awareness on Saturday, April 19. Working in conjunction with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Creighton coaches and players shaved their heads, supporting a cause near to the heart of assistant coach Billy Mohl as his first wife lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Since that time Mohl has been active with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation with each team he worked with.
The Red Storm pushed across single runs in the third and fifth innings, taking advantage of a leadoff double from Jace Jeremiah in the third and a single and stolen base from Jon Legrande in the fifth. Jackson Tucker drove home Jeremiah in the third via an RBI single, while Jayder Raifstanger delivered an RBI single in the fifth.
Creighton answered in a big way in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead. Teddy Deters opened the frame with a single up the middle. Will MacLean kept the hit barrage moving with an RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 2-2. With two down in the frame Matt Scherrman delivered once more with an RBI double, giving him seven RBI in the series and putting Creighton ahead 3-2.
The Bluejays added an insurance run in the sixth as Ben North worked a leadoff walk, Nate McHugh singled to left and a productive out left Creighton with runners at the corners with one down. Capece capitalized with a sacrifice fly to push the Bluejay edge to 4-2.
St. John's drew closer with a run in the seventh courtesy of an RBI ground out from Raifstanger, but the Creighton bullpen closed the door as Noah Klein and Matt Aukerman limited the Red Storm to one run over 3.1 combined innings.
Jimmy Burke earned his second win (4-1) of the series, limiting St. John's to one run on two hits in an inning of relief. Closer Garrett Langrell retired the final two men of the game to collect his ninth save of the season.
