Creighton Women Fall To Seton Hall, 88-79

Creighton Bluejays

Omaha, Neb. -- Down 56-36 at halftime, Creighton Women's Basketball closed within five points in the closing minute before dropping an 88-79 decision to Seton Hall on Monday, December 22.

The loss evened Creighton's record at 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall climbed to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in conference contests.

Things started off well for the Bluejays as Creighton opened the game with seven straight points on a trey from Allison Heathcock as well as buckets from Elizabeth Gentry and Ava Zediker. Seton Hall, however, took control with a 20-0 run over the next four minutes. Mariana Valenzuela led the charge with 12 of her 23 points. The Pirates closed the quarter shooting better than 70% from the field (12-of-17) to take a 30-20 edge after 10 minutes

The Pirates continued to sizzle in the second stanza, pushing their lead to as much as 20 at 45-25 (5:03) and again at 50-30 (3:30). Bluejay freshman Neleigh Gessert started to heat up, hitting consecutive shots from long range to help Creighton close within 14 at 50-36 (2:34), but Seton Hall scored the final six of the half.

A back-and-forth third quarter saw Creighton pull within 12 at 69-57 (1:21), but Seton Hall responded by pushing back out to a 20-point edge at 80-60 with 5:23 left in the contest. Down 84-66 with just over three minutes left, Creighton rattled off 13 straight points to close the game to 84-79 (0:42). Ultimately, however, there wasn't quite enough time to complete the comeback.

Zediker led Creighton with 25 points, while Kennedy Townsend had 14 and Neleigh Gessert delivered 11 points. Zediker closed the game with six rebounds and eight assists, the first Bluejay with at least 25 points, six rebounds and eight assists in a game since at least 2007.

Seton Hall got 23 points from Valenzuela, a career-high 21 points from Shailyn Pinkney, 18 points from Jada Eads and 14 points from Jordana Codio.

The Bluejays will take a few days off for the holidays, then begin a two-game road trip at Georgetown on December 28 and at Villanova on Jan. 1.
