Donations Help GIFD Educate 4,700 Students on Fire Prevention

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Fire Department is extending its gratitude to the dozens of local businesses, organizations and community partners whose generous donations helped fund fire prevention materials for K–5 students during the 2024–2025 school year.

Each fall, GIFD provides educational resources, activity books, safety handouts and classroom materials to elementary schools across Grand Island. These tools help teach children the lifesaving basics of fire safety, emergency preparedness and making smart choices during an emergency. The program is made possible entirely through community support.

In all, local donors contributed $11,355 in 2025, allowing firefighters to visit classrooms, distribute materials, and connect directly with young students in a hands-on and meaningful way.

“I want to extend my thanks to everyone for your donations to our fire prevention program for our schools this year,” Division Chief Phil Thomas said. “Together, we reached 4,700 K–5 students — an incredible impact.”

GIFD sends personalized thank you cards to each contributing business, but the department also wants the community to know how deeply grateful it is for the shared commitment to safety and education. The continued support from Grand Island’s business community helps ensure that every child receives safety instruction that can make a life-changing difference.
