Election Complaint Filed Over Missing Records in Medical Marijuana Ballot Challenge

Lincoln – Earlier today, Common Cause Nebraska Executive Director Gavin Geis filed a complaint with the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission requesting an investigation into John Kuehn — or whomever funded Mr. Kuehn — for failing to disclose expenses related to his challenge of the qualification of the medical marijuana ballot initiatives that voters approved in November 2024.
Geis asks the commission to determine whether Mr. Kuehn — or whomever funded his legal challenge to the ballot measures — must disclose the expenses related to that challenge. It also urges the commission to require disclosure of those expenses and to impose all applicable penalties under the Nebraska Political Accountability and Disclosure Act for failing to report them before the complaint was filed.
“Nebraskans deserve to know who’s working to influence our elections. Allowing special interests or individuals to oppose ballot measures without disclosing their spending undermines our citizen initiative process. If we want to ensure Nebraskans’ voices are heard, we must enforce disclosure laws that show the public who stands against them. If the current law doesn’t cover this, the legislature must strengthen it,” said Gavin Geis, Executive Director of Common Cause Nebraska.
Under Nebraska law, Common Cause Nebraska can only announce that a complaint has been filed. Geis and the organization cannot speak further on the matter unless the NADC determines there has been a violation or the subject of the complaint makes a public statement.
