Elkhorn North Ends GI Home Federal Baseball Season


(Grand Island, NE) - Grand Island Home Federal would come up two runs short on Tuesday night at Ryder Park as they saw their season come to an end with a 6-4 loss to Elkhorn North Equitable Bank in an elimination game for Grand Island at the National Division Class A State American Legion baseball tournament. 

Elkhorn North would get a run in the top of the second inning from Connor Wurdeman with an RBI double, and then in the top of the third inning, Jake Janssen would come up with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Grand Island would answer with a run in the bottom of the third as Ian Arends would score from third base on a wild pitch, making it 2-1 Elkhorn North. 

GI Home Federal would then tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing in one run after Gave Ruiz drew a bases-loaded walk. GI would leave the bases loaded going to the sixth inning. Elkhorn North would then answer in the top of the sixth inning with four runs. Austin McMurtry and Ian Christo would bring around RBI singles and Keegan Driever would bring around a 2-RBI double, making it 6-2 Elkhorn North. 

Grand Island would not completely go away, answering in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Sam Dinkelman would bring in a run on a single, and Gabe Ruiz would draw a bases-loaded walk for the 2nd time in the game. Unfortunately, Grand Island would leave the bases loaded for the second time in the game, leaving the tying run at second base. 

Elkhorn North would get the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, retiring Grand Island in order to secure the win to move on to the championship round of the tournament with a 4-0 record. Lincoln East defeated Creighton Prep in the early game on Tuesday, 9-4. Creighton Prep's season comes to an end. If Lincoln East wants to win the state championship for the National Division bracket, they will have to beat Elkhorn North twice. The championship round is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th, starting at 5:00 pm at Ryder Park. 

Grand Island Home Federal's season comes to an end with a record of 27-18 and finishes with a 2-2 state tournament record. GI wins two games at state for the first time since 2016.
