GI Home Federal Walks Off Pius X To Close Out The Regular Season

(Hastings, NE) - Grand Island Home Federal Bank took Sunday's game in dramatic fashion, with a 7-6 walk-off victory over Pius X UBT at Duncan Field. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the sixth when Bryson Walker singled, scoring one run.

The two-hour time limit rule would come into effect, so after Grand Island scored the run, the game would be decided complete. 

Despite falling down by four runs in the first inning, Pius X UBT tried to fight back. Pius X UBT closed the gap by scoring on a double, a sacrifice fly, and a solo home run.

Pius X UBT opened the scoring in the first after Caleb Davis grounded out, scoring one run.

Grand Island Home Federal Bank flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on three hits to take the lead, 5-1. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Brody Davidson following a 6-pitch at-bat that drove in two.

Greyson Shum hit a sacrifice fly, which helped Pius X UBT tie the game at five in the top of the third.

An inside the park home run by Kai Vanis gave Pius X UBT the lead, 6-5, in the top of the fourth.

Ian Arends doubled down the right field line, which helped Grand Island Home Federal Bank tie the game at six in the bottom of the fourth.

Davidson earned the win for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. The hurler surrendered one hit and zero runs over one inning, striking out one and walking none. Henry Suelter took the loss for Pius X UBT. The hurler went two and two-thirds innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on three hits, striking out one and walking two. Miles Nelson started the game for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. The starter surrendered zero hits and one run (zero earned) over one inning, striking out one and walking one. Brady Shottenkirk started the game for Pius X UBT. The starting pitcher gave up three hits and five runs over three innings, striking out two and walking four. Braedyn Towler, Gabe Ruiz, and Arends each appeared in relief for Grand Island Home Federal Bank.

Ethan Mader and Walker each collected two hits for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. Davidson and Walker each drove in two runs for Grand Island Home Federal Bank. Grand Island Home Federal Bank had patience at the plate, tallying six walks for the game. Carson Washburn and Arends led the team with two walks each. Grayson Sack stole three bases.

Vanis went 3-for-3 at the plate and led the team with four runs batted in. Vanis stole three bases. Pius X UBT had a strong eye at the plate, piling up six walks for the game.

Grand Island goes 4-0 on the weekend with wins over Millard South, Norfolk, Greely, CO, and Pius X. 

Grand Island rounds out the regular season with a 28-9 record. Next up will be the A7 area seniors tournament that will be played starting Friday, July 17th at Ryder Park in Grand Island.
