GIPD Conducts over 650 Traffic Stops During the State Fair Traffic Enforcement Campaign

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department was awarded up to $20,000 in grant funding to conduct additional impaired driving and speeding enforcement during the 2026 Nebraska State Fair.

The enforcement effort took place from August 28 through September 7, coinciding with the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. During this time, GIPD Officers conducted additional traffic enforcement during the 11-day period.

In total, officers conducted 668 traffic stops and issued 232 citations while providing 429 warnings for various traffic violations. Officers also made 180 arrests related to a variety of offenses encountered during enforcement activities. As part of the campaign's impaired driving, speeding, and other traffic violation enforcement efforts, Officers arrested:

15 impaired drivers.
3 arrests for possession/open container alcohol.
3 arrests for MIP Alcohol
8 arrests or citations for careless driving or racing on the streets. 
48 arrests or citations issued for speeding.

The Grand Island Police Department thanks the Nebraska Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety for its continued support in making these enforcement efforts possible.  Impaired driving and speeding enforcement campaigns are conducted to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and save lives by encouraging safer driving behaviors throughout the community.
