GIPD Using LVT Units

(Grand Island, NE) - The Grand Island Police Department is taking a new tool and technology to law enforcement for a test drive. GIPD is on a demo run for two months with two of the mobile units that belong to Live View Technologies. These units help monitor areas of the city that can bolster police presence without the police even being in the vicinity. GIPD has them currently placed at Ryder Park and Pioneer Park. Curfew violations have been occurring at both parks, along with other criminal mischief.
The small white trailer units are quite impressive. There is a set of solar panels that help power the unit at all times. A extendable part up into the air gives cameras the opportunity to catch footage at all times and upload for officers to view, monitor, and go back on if criminal activity were to occur. The cameras have a pan, tilt zoom feature along with thermal imaging, giving officers the capability to operate the cameras remotely. Artificial intelligence is also built into the LVT unit to determine whether an item picked up by the cameras is an animal, a car, or a human.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott tells KRGI News one of the bigger things that LVT can assist with is the park curfews. "Currently, right now, with the park curfew going into effect at 11:00 pm we actually have alerts that are sent out that if the system detects a person in the park after 11:00 pm it will send an alert to various phone numbers and emails that we have set up. It (LVT unit) will also do an audio alert over the speaker that's on top that alerts the person that they are in violation of city code."
When the demo time is over GIPD will look at the stats that LVT provides and see if there is a reduction on criminal activity. The exploration is already in motion within several city departments to see if it's possible to work into the 2026 budget to possibly purchase one or two of the LVT units to assist the city full-time.
