GISH Deals With Swatting Issue
Grand Island Public Schools was the victim of a swatting call yesterday.
Superintendent Matt Fisher issued the following letter to Patrons.
Dear GISH Families,
On behalf of Senior High and GIPS, I wanted to let you know of a resolved situation that took place today at GISH.
You may be aware that a trend of hoax calls or “swatting” calls have been hitting schools in Nebraska in recent weeks. We can confirm the Grand Island Police Department (GIPD) received one of those calls consistent with “swatting” today. The caller made a false threat towards Senior High.
Out of due diligence, our GISH Administration Team initiated our standard safety protocols. Additionally, our Safety & Security Team alongside GIPD responded right away and informed us of the call and to affirm their support of our safety efforts.
Please know these “swatting” calls are phony.
We want you to know that all students and staff have remained safe at school today. No learning has been disrupted and business is operating as usual.
GIPD has confirmed for us that at this time there is no credible threat towards the school.
We have been working with the GIPD as they investigate the origin of these calls hitting Nebraska schools. Per our standard safety protocol, we had an increased presence of GIPD vehicles and officers on site at Senior High briefly as they investigated. We appreciate the continued collaboration we have with our law enforcement partners.
It is understandable, in light of recent national and local events, that everyone is on edge. We are fortunate to have a dedicated Security and Threat Assessment team that is constantly in communication with local, state, and national law enforcement. We work collaboratively every single day with those groups to develop and implement safety protocols to help keep our schools safe.
If you have any questions regarding school and safety precautions or need any additional support, please reach out to the district office at 308.385.5900.
