GISH DECA Hosts Spike County Cancer

GRAND ISLAND (Neb.) — Islander staff will square-off against students on the volleyball court for a good cause.

The Grand Island Senior High (GISH) DECA chapter invites the community to support children and families battling pediatric cancer with a fun volleyball benefit event called "Spike Out Cancer".

Scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, at 6:00 p.m. at the signature GISH West Gym, the evening will feature a tournament-style volleyball matchup pitting popular GISH staff members against student teams to Islander Pride and champion a good cause.

Organized as part of DECA’s national challenge for school chapters to engage their communities, the event couples hands-on business leadership with a meaningful impact. Attendees will watch bracket-style tournament play featuring high school educators, including Mr. Calvin Hubbard, Mr. Chris Ladwig, Mr. Eon Lemburg, Coach Jeff McQuinn, and more as they face off against ambitious student squads. All proceeds and outreach efforts from the tournament directly support pediatric cancer awareness and fundraising.

"Not a lot of people know that every day 43 kids are diagnosed with pediatric cancer, and I want to be able to unite the community with something exciting and raise awareness," Manasik Yaya, GISH Junior and DECA Vice President, said. "Our school is competition-based, and I thought volleyball would bring the community together."

Beyond raising funds, the GISH DECA chapter, an after-school organization preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs across various business pathways, aims to showcase student involvement and club growth.

Grand Island families, students, and supporters are encouraged to fill the gym on November 11 at 6:00 p.m. to cheer on their favorite teachers and join the fight against pediatric cancer.
