Governor Pillen and NDOT Recognize Snow Fighter Recognition Week
Feb. 8, 2024 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Today, Governor Pillen along with the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) recognized Nebraska’s Snow Fighters with Snow Fighter Recognition Week Feb. 12 to Feb. 16.
“Safety is always a priority at the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The commitment our Snow Fighters have each and every storm is a testament to the dedication to safety of the traveling public.” says Vicki Kramer, NDOT Director. “In 2023, our Snow Fighters spent over 200,000 hours clearing over 3 million lane miles. In 2024, our Snow Fighters have continued to serve Nebraska by clearing roads and runways at our airports to continue to help Nebraskans and our visitors travel across the state.”
Today, Governor Pillen signed a proclamation declaring Snow Fighter Recognition Week as Feb. 12 to Feb. 16 to serve as a reminder for everyone on the critical importance of winter snow operations before, during and after storms.
“Snow Fighters Recognition Week provides an opportunity to thank those public servants who spend countless hours in the cabs of snow plows and snow blowers during the winter months,” said Governor Pillen. “When the need arises, they clear our roadways, ensuring that Nebraskans get to their destinations as safely as possible.”
“The snow fight effort is a successful illustration of local and state government working together to overcome adversity when disaster strikes,” says Erv Portis, NEMA Assistant Director. “Multiple counties needed and requested assistance because they were overwhelmed by the magnitude of this blizzard.
Governor Pillen’s disaster declaration gave the state a strategy to bring together resources and provide access to Nebraska’s agriculture and livestock, producers, and facilities.”
NDOT reminds drivers to slow down when approaching a plow, never pass on the right, and to give the Snow Fighter space as you pass them. Be patient, stay alert, and give operators room to work.
