September 16, 2026 (LINCOLN, NEB.)  —  Governor Jim Pillen has signed a proclamation recognizing September as National Preparedness Month and emphasizing the importance of preparing individuals, families and communities for emergencies and disasters.

For many Nebraskans, wildfire preparedness has become more personal this year. Whether living in a rural community, on a farm or ranch, or in an urban area, Nebraskans are encouraged to understand the hazards that could affect them and take steps to prepare.

“Preparedness is a team effort,” said Governor Pillen. “This year’s fires demonstrated the importance of local fire departments, emergency managers, state agencies, federal partners, volunteers and — most importantly — Nebraskans working together. Our communities have shown tremendous resilience and a willingness to look out for one another. That spirit is an important part of being prepared for whatever comes next.”

The 2026 National Preparedness Month theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” highlights three key ways individuals and communities can strengthen preparedness and build greater resilience.

Joining Governor Pillen at the proclamation signing ceremony were NEMA Preparedness and Operations Section Administrator Sean Runge; Nebraska State Fire Marshal Doug Hohbein; Sandra Hobson, Program Director of the Nebraska Preparedness Partnership; and Amanda Burki, Deputy Director of Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Management.
