Grand Island Baseball Opens Season Crushing Lincoln HIgh, 11-1
(Grand Island, NE)- Grand Island Senior High scored seven runs in the fifth inning, which helped them defeat Lincoln High 11-1 on Thursday. Sam Schroeder hit a solo home run to center field, Gabe Ruiz singled, scoring one run, Miles Nelson hit a grand slam to left field, and Grayson Sack drew a walk, scoring one run.
The Islanders got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Ruiz doubled to left field, and Ethan Mader singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
Grand Island added two runs in the second after Schroeder doubled.
Keegan Inks earned the win for Grand Island. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and one run (zero earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out seven and walking one. Lucas Long took the loss for the Links. The pitcher went four innings, surrendering six runs on six hits, striking out two, and walking two. Sack appeared in relief for Grand Island.
Grand Island tallied nine hits in the game. Nelson, the number eight hitter for Grand Island Varsity Islanders, led the way with four runs batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-3 on the day. Mader, Schroeder, and Ruiz each collected two hits for GISH.
Carter Duncan and Ben Lanham each collected one hit for Lincoln High. The Links were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Oliver Holbein made the most plays with seven.
