Grand Island Mounts Comeback To Down Columbus, 3-2
(Grand Island, NE) - Grand Island topped Columbus 3-2 on Monday after taking the lead late in the game. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth when Brody Davidson singled, scoring one run.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Grand Island pitchers struck out four, while Columbus sat down three.
Grand Island got on the board in the second inning after Brock Cushing grounded out, scoring one run.
Columbus captured the lead, 2-1, at the top of the fourth after Camden Gustafson grounded out, and Carter Renteria singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.
Ian Arends singled down the right field line, which helped Grand Island tie the game at two in the bottom of the fifth.
Miles Nelson earned the win for Grand Island. The starter surrendered five hits and two runs (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out four and walking none. Damon Liermann took the loss for Columbus Discoverers Varsity. The hurler went one inning, allowing one run on three hits, striking out one and walking none. Gavin Ruether and Gabe Ruiz each collected two hits for Grand Island. Davidson, Arends, and Cushing each drove in one run for Grand Island.
Connor Cameron, Jack Holys, Renteria, Collin Rausch, and Bryson Reeder each collected one hit for Columbus Discoverers Varsity. Renteria and Gustafson each drove in one run for Columbus Discoverers Varsity. Columbus turned one double play in the game.
The Islanders wrap up the regular season with a record of 18-8 and now will await information on their placement for the district post-season tournament.
