Hastings House Fire Causes Major Damage


Hastings Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire around 11:10 a.m., on Monday, April 13, 
2026 at 135 W. Ninth St. The resident returned home to find the single-story house filled with smoke and reported the fire.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about 15 minutes and then worked to ventilate the  house.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The fire caused an estimated $40,000 worth of damage to the home. The majority of the fire  damage was to the kitchen area on the main floor. The Red Cross was also requested to provide assistance to the two adults and two children who were displaced by the fire.

Three dogs also lived in the house. Law enforcement rescued the first two dogs by pulling them  out of the home. Firefighters rescued the third dog, who was transported by veterinarians.  Hastings Fire & Rescue administered oxygen to all three dogs with pet oxygen masks. No other injuries were reported, and no other structures were damaged. 

The Hastings Police Department, Hastings Utility Department, City of Hastings Street  Department and Hastings Rural Fire Department were dispatched to the incident as well. The home did not have working smoke or carbon monoxide alarms.
