Hastings Police receives Carter Kits as donation from local family
The Hastings Police Department as apart of a donation from one local family is bolstering its ability to be able to help calm children on the Autism Spectrum or those experiencing trauma.
The Kelley Family of Hastings has generously donated multiple Carter Kits to the Department.
The kits which were created in 2019 by public safety professionals in Michigan are a specialized sensory bag designed for first responders, schools, and professionals to calm and support children on the autism spectrum or those experiencing trauma. These kits, often found in police cars or ambulances, contain clinician-approved items like noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, sunglasses, and fidget toys to assist in emergency care.
The Kelleys, inspired by their son Bradley who was diagnosed with nonverbal autism brought the packs in Monday.
The Kits will be given to the School Resource Officers within the Department as well as one patrol unit. Hastings Police says that because of these donations, their officers will be better equipped to respond with care, understanding, and compassion.
