High School Juniors Invited to Apply to Open Space

Hastings College

(Hastings, Nebraska) – Open Space for the Visual and Performing Arts immersion experience for current high school juniors is set for Tuesday, June 18 through Saturday, June 22 on the Hastings College campus. The application and additional details can be found at hastings.edu/openspace.

"As we prepare to welcome a new cohort of talented students to Open Space, I’m reminded of the experience that awaits them,” said Dr. Annette Vargas, Hastings College vice president for student access, enrollment and performance. “Open Space is more than just an opportunity to explore the arts — it's a gateway to discovery, collaboration and personal growth. The passion and dedication of students selected every year is inspiring, and Open Space ignites their creativity and sets them on a path toward realizing their dreams."

The Visual Arts track offers students a chance to explore glassblowing, ceramics and screen printing with daily sessions with Hastings College in the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center. The Performing Arts track allows students to apply and focus on one performance area, including acting, speech, chamber choir, creative writing, piano and instrumental music, including brass, woodwind or percussion ensembles.

Students in both tracks will work with Hastings College faculty and alumni.

Open Space is tailored to students interested in pursuing or participating in the arts, speech and creative writing in college, and is an excellent opportunity for students to be immersed in the college environment and develop their craft. Students who complete Open Space are also awarded an additional scholarship to attend Hastings College.

Open Space for the Visual Arts and Performing Arts is valued at more than $1,000, but the Jackson Dinsdale Endowment Fund at the Hastings College Foundation grants each student a $750 scholarship to attend, lowering the student commitment to $250. However, no student will be turned away due to finances, as additional assistance is available to families who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.
