Huskers Stave Off Rutgers Comeback to Clinch 5-3 Victory

The No. 8 Nebraska softball team retired three straight batters after allowing two runs in the top of the seventh to hold onto a 5-3 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday at Bowlin Stadium.

The Huskers improved to 29-6 (10-1 Big Ten) on the season, while Rutgers fell to 18-20 (3-11 Big Ten). NU has now won every conference series so far this season and has not lost one since April of 2024.

Hannah Camenzind accounted for two RBIs for the Big Red after launching a 279-foot homer in the third inning. Jordy Frahm, Ava Kuszak, Kacie Hoffmann, Samantha Bland and Alexis Jensen each added a hit, while Hannah Coor and Lauren Camenzind each had an RBI. Frahm doubled and H. Camenzind and Kuszak homered for NU.

Alexis Jensen (15-2) grabbed the win in the circle. She threw six innings with three runs and four hits, along with nine strikeouts. Frahm earned her ninth save of the season after coming in in relief and adding two strikeouts.

Frahm doubled to left center in the bottom of the third and scored on a H. Camenzind 279-foot, two-run shot that hit the “N” at the top the wall of Nebraska’s hitting facility. Kuszak followed that with a solo shot of her own to make the score 3-0 Huskers.

In the bottom of the fourth, Emmerson Cope walked and was pinch run for by Kennadi Williams. A Bland sacrifice bunt sent Williams to second and a Jensen single put runners on first and third. L. Camenzind reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Williams and sent Dakota Carter, who pinch ran for Jensen, to second. Carter scored on a Coor fielder’s choice to extend the lead to 5-0.

Rutgers added a run in the top of the sixth and mounted a comeback with two runs in the top of the seventh, but NU held on to grab the 5-3 win.

Nebraska’s series finale against Rutgers is set for Sunday, April 5 at 12 p.m. (CT) at Bowlin Stadium.
