Husker Women Fall to No. 22 Maryland
Lincoln - Logan Nissley scored a career-high 22 points, but it wasn’t enough for Nebraska as No. 22 Maryland cruised to a 78-60 victory over the Huskers on Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Nissley, a 6-0 junior guard from Bismarck, N.D., found her 11th straight start while adding a rebound and a steal. With the loss, the Big Red move to 16-8 overall and 5-8 in the Big Ten, while Maryland improves to 19-6 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten.
Nissley hit 8-of-16 shots from the floor, including 6-of-12 from behind the arc.
Callin Hake added to Nebraska’s efforts with eight points, going 2-for-2 from the free throw line and adding two rebounds with five assists.
Britt Prince and Jessica Petrie both added seven points to the board. Prince’s play was kept to a minimum in the first half, finding her first points in the game off a pair of free throws in the second quarter. This is Prince’s second lowest scoring game of the season.
Petrie continued her solid play going 3-for-6, while adding a three. The 6-2 forward from Gold Coast, Australia recorded five rebounds and a pair of assists. Petrie’s lone 3-pointer in the second quarter gave NU its closest trail of the night of four points.
Amiah Hargrove and Petra Bozan contributed to the efforts by adding 11 points combined.
As a team, the Huskers hit 39.3 percent (22-56) of their shots from the field, including 9-of-25 threes (36.0 %). The Big Red also shot 7-for-9 behind the free throw line, while giving Maryland 22 turnovers which ties for the highest number of turnovers they’ve had all season.
Maryland had a dominant performance out-numbering Nebraska in every category. The Terrapins shot for 50 percent (31-62) including 8-for-24 (33.3%). The Terrapins also hit 8-for-11 free throws while adding 39 rebounds and 13 steals.
Maryland had four players shoot in double-digits with Isi Ozzy-Momodu leading the way with 16 points, Oluchi Okananwa contributed 14 while Rainey Welson had 13 and Yarden Garzon added 11 points to help the Terrapins to victory.
In a fast-paced first half, Maryland took a 45-28 lead into halftime shooting 46% with five of their six 3-pointers coming in the second quarter.
Maryland’s full court press led Nebraska to four early turnovers in the first three minutes of play. Maryland controlled the tempo with Okananwa recording nine of the Terrapins 15 points in the first quarter.
Logan Nissley set fire shooting 5-9 in the first half and 13 points, two behind her career high. She buried three 3-pointers going 3-6. Petrie added five points, grabbing a 3-pointer to cut the Terrapins lead by four in the second quarter.
Callin Hake added three points, while Britt Prince grabbed her first points of the night off a pair of free throws. Amiah Hargrove contributed a freethrow.
Maryland hit 24 of their points from inside the paint, found 23 rebounds and 13 points off NU turnovers in the first half.
Nebraska hit 37.0 percent (10-27) of its attempts, including 5-of-11 threes while going 3-for-4 at the free throw line.
Maryland hit 46.2 percent (18-39) of its attempts, including 6-for-17 threes while going 3-for-4 at the free throw line. Maryland won the first-half turnover battle 15-11.
Nissley added back-to-back threes in the start of the third to break her career high points, but Maryland extended the lead margin by 30 points (70-40) at the end of three quarters. Nebraska outscored Maryland in the fourth with Hake grabbing five points, Nissley added a 3-pointer and Claire Johnson, Hargrove and Bozan adding a basket each to cut the lead to 18, but it wasn’t enough as the Terrapins cruised to a 78-60 victory.
Nebraska hits the road traveling to Minneapolis, Minn. to face Minnesota on Thursday.
