The No. 16 Nebraska softball team opened the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 4-1 victory over the Baylor Bears in the first of two games Thursday at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.

Jordyn Bahl (4-1) earned the victory in the circle for Nebraska (9-2). Bahl did not allow an earned run and struck out nine batters while tossing a two-hitter. Lillie Walker (1-2) took the loss for Baylor (7-5).

Offensively, Olivia DiNardo went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Bella Bacon hit a home run for the Huskers and Hannah Camenzind had two hits, both of which were RBI singles.

Bacon knocked her second career home run in the top of the second to open up the scoring and give NU a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Ava Bredwell reached on a single through the left side, and Kacie Hoffmann reached on an error that sent Bredwell to third. A Hannah Camenzind RBI single sent Bredwell to the plate to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Baylor loaded the bases with no outs and was threatening in the bottom of the fifth, but Bahl posted three straight strikeouts to escape the inning.

Bredwell and Hoffmann walked in the top of the fifth to reach first and second, and Kennadi Williams came in to pinch run for Hoffmann. Hannah Camenzind’s second RBI single of the day scored Bredwell before Abbie Squier hit a sacrifice fly to score Williams and make the Big Red lead 4-1 going into the sixth.

The Bears took advantage of an error to score a two-out run in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough, and the Huskers claimed the 4-1 victory.

NU will continue with Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic action tonight at 9:30 p.m. (CT) against No. 4 UCLA. The game will be streamed on FloSoftball and can be heard for free across the Huskers Radio Network.
