Listen to an interview with Karen Rathke.
The World's Largest Totally Irrigated Working Farm Show is playing host to a food drive thatcollected more than 16,000 pounds of food in 2025. Donations are distributed to local backpack programs, food pantries, and shelters.
Collecting for the Heartland United Way’s 2026 Heartland United Way Food Drive began at local grocery stores before the show from August 31 to September 11.
Proteins like peanut butter, tuna and chicken as well as soup and stews are among the most needed food items.
The largest food collection happens during Husker Harvest Days, September 15th-17th. FFA students received free entry into Husker Harvest Days with a minimum donation of five non-perishable food items.
The Heartland United Way Food Drive is made possible by community members, FFA chapters and these generous sponsors: Husker Harvest Days, Aurora Cooperative, Farm Progress and Nebraska Farmer.
