Ian Arends’s Big Day Keeps Grand Island Baseball Season Alive


(Papillion, NE) - Ian Arends drove in four runs on three hits to lead Grand Island past Lincoln Southwest 5-2 on Monday at Werner Park in the Class A State Tournament. Arends singled in the second inning, scoring two runs, and singled in the eighth inning, scoring two.

Grand Island got on the board in the second inning after Arends singled, scoring two runs.

Joaquin Olivas grounded into a fielder's choice, which helped Lincoln Southwest tie the game at two in the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the eighth, Grand Island broke up the tie when Arends singled, scoring two runs. Then a fly out by Grayson Sack followed to extend the lead to 5-2.

Blake Caspar earned the win for Grand Island. The hurler allowed zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out two and walking none. Kenan Deumic took the loss for Lincoln Southwest Varsity Silver Hawks. The hurler went two and one-third innings, giving up three runs on five hits, striking out two and walking one. Sack stepped on the mound first for Grand Island. The starter surrendered six hits and two runs over six innings, striking out three and walking one. Kaden Millard opened the game for Lincoln Southwest Varsity Silver Hawks. The pitcher gave up five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out three and walking three.

Grand Island tallied 10 hits in the game. Ethan Mader and Miles Nelson each collected multiple hits for Grand Island. Carson Washburn paced Grand Island with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, accumulating six walks for the game.

Jaxon Pieper and Olivas were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Lincoln Southwest Varsity Silver Hawks. Pieper, Andrew Jackson, and Caison Seymore each collected two hits for Lincoln Southwest Varsity Silver Hawks. Lincoln Southwest turned one double play in the game.

Lincoln Southwest sees its season come to an end.

Grand Island (20-10) will now play another elimination game vs an opponent to be announced on Tuesday, May 19th at 7:00 pm on KRGI 1430/105.5 & krgi.com.
