Late Rally Lifts Creighton Baseball to 7-6 Win Over Omaha

Omaha, Neb. -- Trailing 6-3 with two down in the bottom of the eighth, Creighton Baseball knotted the game with five straight singles and walked off the contest with a run on a wild pitch in the ninth to defeat Omaha 7-6 on Tuesday, March 24. The win lifted the Bluejays to 10-11 on the season, while Omaha fell to 8-14.

Ben North ignited Creighton's rally in the eighth with a sinking line drive off the glove of a diving attempt from Omaha center fielder Sam Beck. Isaac Wachsmann followed with a single through the right side, then Connor Capece laced an RBI single to left center. Chris Baillargeon following with an RBI single up the middle and Joe Washburn tied the game with an RBI single through the right side.

In the ninth the Bluejays took advantage of a leadoff walk to Nick Bowron and a sacrifice bunt from Rocco Gump to set the table. After an intentional walk to Nate McHugh, a wild pitch forced the Mavericks to issue another intentional walk to North. With two down and a 1-2 count on Capece, the second wild pitch of the frame led to the Creighton victory.

Early in the game Creighton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second as Capece walked, stole second and scored via an RBI single from Baillargeon.

Omaha responded with four runs on two hits as a hit batter, a bunt single and an intentional walk set the stage for a sac fly from Tyler Bishop, followed by a three-run blast from Nick Riggs.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bluejays answered with a pair North was hit by a pitch and raced home on an RBI triple from Wachsmann. The Bluejay center field scored moments later on a sac fly by Capece.

Bluejay closer Matt Goldenbaum worked a scoreless ninth to earn his first win of the season (1-1), while Omaha closer Nate Moquin took the loss (0-1), allowing one run on three walks and a pair of wild pitches in two-third of an inning.

Creighton is back in action on Wednesday, March 25 against South Dakota State at 6:00 pm in Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
