LB 921 Advanced at the Nebraska Legislature

Nebraska Legislative News #2

LB 921 faced over four hours of debate on Monday at the Nebraska Legislature.  The bill adopts the Nebraska Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act and clarifies employer duties under the Non-English-Speaking Workers Protection Act.   LB 921 requires employers to notify the Department of Labor when a mass layoff event occurs that affects 25 or more employees at least 60 days in advance of the mass layoff event.

The sticking point during debate was LB 544 which was added to the bill as an amendment. LB 544 requires recipients of Unemployment Benefits to (1) respond to an offer of employment within two business days, and (2) notify a prospective employer if they need to cancel or reschedule an interview in order to remain eligible for benefits that week.

District 33 Senator Dan Quick spoke on the issue.
