LB1050 Fails to Advance at Legislature

Nebraska Legislative News #2

After four hours of debate, LB1050 failed to advance at the Nebraska Legislature. The amended bill would have directed the Nebraska Department of Education to create a model policy to improve reading skills.

The major sticking point was the potential for districts to hold students back who weren’t meeting standards after third grade. Senator Jayne Raybould mounted a successful filibuster as the cloture vote fell two shy of the 33 needed to end debate.

Senator Dave Murman introduced the original bill on behalf of the governor.
