LB1237 and LB839 Advance at the Legislature on Tuesday

After three days of debate, LB1237 advanced at the Nebraska Legislature.  Introduced by the executive board, the bill would enhance security measures at the Capitol. District 33 Senator Dan Lonowski related a personal experience when a shooter killed 14 while he was at Fort Hood Texas.

Legislative Bill 1237 introduced by the members of the Executive Board is the product of consultations between the legislative, executive, and judicial branch leadership in consultation with the Nebraska State Patrol regarding the need for appropriate security measures to be considered and implemented to ensure that all Nebraska residents are able to enjoy the State Capitol and participate safely and fully in all governmental functions carried out within the building. Legislative Bill 1237 would amend section 81-1108.15 to provide that following consultation with the Executive Board, the Governor, the Chief Justice , and the State Capitol Administrator the Nebraska State Patrol, no later than January 1, 2027, shall implement procedures to ensure the State Capitol is secure and to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the building with weapons or prohibited substances.

LB839 advanced at the Unicameral.  The bill, introduced by Senator Victor Roundtree, requires cities to report the number of housing units designed and constructed with accessibility requirements according to the federal Fair Housing Act. District 37 Senator Stan Clouse spoke on the measure twice during debate before the bill advanced on a 29-1 vote.
