Local Programming Highlights 2025 National Book Festival

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Public Library is proud to take part in The Festival Near You, a statewide initiative celebrating the 2025 National Book Festival by bringing literature to communities across Nebraska.
This local programming complements the National Book Festival held in Washington, D.C., and offers Nebraskans a unique opportunity to engage with the state’s literary heritage. As part of this celebration, the Nebraska Center for the Book has selected Ted Kooser: More Than a Local Wonder by Carla Ketner to represent Nebraska as its 2025 Great Reads from Great Places children’s title.
This beautifully illustrated picture book introduces young readers to the life and legacy of Ted Kooser—U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner—highlighting his deep Nebraska roots and lifelong dedication to storytelling.
The Grand Island Public Library will host a special author event featuring Carla Ketner on Thursday, August 7 at 4 p.m. in Meeting Room BC. This family-friendly presentation invites readers of all ages to hear about the creation of the book, learn more about Ted Kooser and ask the author questions. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served. Books will also be available for purchase.
This event is part of a larger effort coordinated by the Nebraska Center for the Book in partnership with the Library of Congress. The Festival Near You brings the spirit of the National Book Festival to local communities across Nebraska, celebrating the state’s rich literary culture and encouraging readers of all ages to connect with books and authors.
