National Poll Worker Recruitment Day Celebrated August 12

Grand Island, Nebr. – Tuesday, August 12, 2025, is National Poll Worker Recruitment Day.

The day was launched in 2020 by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) as an initiative to address the need for poll workers across the country, to promote civic participation and volunteerism and ensure safe, secure, accurate and accessible elections.

“Signing up as a poll worker is an act of service for your community and your country,” said EAC Chairman Donald Palmer. “The EAC launched National Poll Worker Recruitment Day five years ago to address poll worker shortages and encourage new generations to sign up to be poll workers. The EAC is excited to continue our work supporting state and local election offices in their ongoing recruitment efforts.”

The Hall County Election Office utilizes nearly 200 poll workers for each statewide election. Those workers all take training and then set up polling sites, check-in voters and issue ballots on Election Day.

“Being a poll worker is a great way to learn and earn – you learn how elections work and earn money at the same time,” said Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet. “Poll workers get to see and participate in the double-checks, the protections and the verification processes involved in an election.”

Poll workers are also paid at least minimum wage or may donate their wages to a participating non-profit organization. Overstreet said working an election is a great way to earn some extra spending cash or to raise money for a valued community organization. Local non-profits may recruit poll workers to raise money for that organization, she said.

“Poll workers are our friends, our family and neighbors,” Palmer said. “We encourage those who are able to sign up and help America vote.”

The next statewide elections in Nebraska are in 2026 – May 12 for the primary election and November 3 for the general election.

A poll worker application is available at the Hall County Election Office, 200 S. Sycamore, St., Suite 8, or on the Hall County website at www.hallcountyne.gov.
