No. 1 Huskers Set Devaney Center Record on Friday Night

No. 1 Nebraska volleyball picked up a 25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 25-10 win over No. 25 North Carolina on Friday evening at John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska (9-0) finished with a season-high 13 aces, setting a new Bob Devaney Sports Center record. The Huskers’ 13 aces are the most by the Big Red since NU totaled 14 against Alabama A&M in 2005.

Harper Murray led the Huskers with 12 kills and hit .346 while also adding six digs. With her 12 kills, she moved past Lauren Stivrins for the seventh-most kills by a Husker in the rally-scoring era.

Andi Jackson posted 10 kills on .571 hitting, followed by seven kills each from Manaia Ogbechie and Teraya Sigler. Ryan Hunter garnered six kills on seven kills for the Huskers.

Bergen Reilly led Nebraska with 34 assists, moving into fourth on Nebraska’s all-time career assists leaderboard. 

Olivia Mauch notched a team-high 10 digs, while Jackson and Ogbechie paced the Big Red with four blocks each. 

Set 1: Nebraska took control early, using a 6-1 run to lead 10-4 and force a Tar Heel timeout. UNC scored three straight points to trim the deficit to 12-7, but a kill from Sigler and an ace from Jackson put the Big Red ahead 15-8 at the media timeout. North Carolina got no closer than five points the rest of the way, as Nebraska cruised to an easy win in the first. The Huskers hit .261 and had four blocks, holding North Carolina to .000.

Set 2: Nebraska scored three straight points to take a 12-9 lead, but North Carolina battled back and tied the score at 14-14 on an ace from Jackie Taylor. The Huskers jumped ahead 16-14, but the Tar Heels rattled off five straight points to lead 22-18 and force a timeout from the Big Red. North Carolina scored three of four to close out the second set and even the match, capping it off with a kill from Chelsea Thorpe.

Set 3: North Carolina stormed out to a 6-3 lead in the third and pushed its advantage to 12-8 on a Nebraska error. The Big Red responded with four straight to tie it at 12-12, and the teams battled back-and-forth for multiple points before Nebraska capitalized on a 4-1 run to take an 18-15 lead. North Carolina got within two at 20-18, but Nebraska pulled away from the visitors to take a 2-1 lead in a hard-fought third set. The Huskers hit .353 and held UNC to a .000 clip.

Set 4: The Huskers took a commanding 9-1 lead on two aces from Choboy and a UNC attacking error and pushed their lead to 12-1. Nebraska controlled the set from start to finish, recording four aces and hitting at a blistering .714 pace to secure the four-set match victory.  

No. 1 Nebraska continues its homestand on Sunday, Sept. 20, as the Huskers host FGCU at noon inside John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The match will be streamed on B1G+.
