Northwest Boys Hang On For OT Winner Vs Boys Town


(Grand Island, NE) - It was another back-and-forth game for the Northwest Vikings on Thursday night hanging on at home to defeat Boys Town in overtime 66-64. The Vikings would trail 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. In the second Northwest would trail by two, 35-33, thanks to a Jaden Brandt steal and score in the final seconds of the first half. Northwest would have an end of third quarter lead 49-47. Both teams would trade points in the fourth quarter. Boys Town would have a four point lead with two minutes remaining. Northwest would scrap back tying the game at 62 all to force overtime. The Cowboys would have the ball last in regulation with 20 seconds left in the game as an off-balanced three-point attempt would come up short for Nyree Poteet.

The Vikings would outscore the Cowboys 4-2 in the extra four-minute overtime period. Cam Walker would have a two-point field goal and Sam Dinkelman along with Jaden Brandt would have a free throw each. The Cowboys had a chance to tie the game at the end of overtime but a free throw jumper would fall off the back iron missing for Nyree Poteet. The Cowboys would get the offensive rebound but eventually in the final seconds would throw the ball out of bounds on an errant pass with only a half second remaining securing the win for the Vikings. 

Boys Town would hit 12 three-pointers in the game. Three makes from Nyree Poteet. Jorge Reyes and Tyler Segar would each have four treys. Marqas Gray had one made three-pointer. The Cowboys played their fifth overtime game of the season as they are now 3-2 in the contest. Boys Town is now 8-5 and host Gretna East on Friday, January 24th. 

Northwest is now 11-4 on the season and has won 7 in a row. Northwest will next be in action on Tuesday, January 28th hosting Seward in the Central Conference quarter-finals at 7:15 pm. The Northwest girls will host Aurora at 5:30 pm Tuesday night. The Viking girls will have a road trip on Saturday, January 25th at Ogallala before the start of the Central Conference tournament.
