Northwest Wins Defensive Battle Over Gross, 17-7

(Grand Island, NE) - Under the Friday night lights at Viking Field, the Northwest Vikings anchored down for a gritty defensive showdown, overpowering the Omaha Gross Catholic Cougars 17-7.

Gross Catholic struck first, stunning the home crowd on the opening drive with an explosive 62-yard touchdown dash. But Northwest refused to blink. In the second quarter, Blake Wissing ripped off a thrilling 44-yard touchdown run to draw the Vikings even at 7-7. Northwest threatened to pull ahead just before halftime, but Bryson Walker’s 37-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.

The decisive moment came late in the third quarter when Owen Wiese punched in a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 39 seconds remaining, handing Northwest a lead they would never surrender.

After allowing that early score, the black and gold defense put on a masterclass, shutting down the Cougars and forcing four turnovers. Two of those takeaways came in a chaotic fourth quarter—including a key stop right after a 35-minute weather delay. Walker then redeemed himself in the game's final seconds, drilling a 40-yard field goal with :16 on the clock to put the game out of reach.
