NSP Investigating Death Near Ashland

June 28, 2025 (Ashland, Neb.)  — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating an incident in which a person died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Ashland. The incident occurred in the presence of an Ashland Police Officer.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday, NSP was contacted by the Ashland Police Department regarding an incident that had just occurred. Preliminary investigation shows that an Ashland Police Officer had responded to a report of a crash near the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 63, southwest of Ashland.

Upon arrival, the officer observed the driver involved in the crash outside the vehicle. The subject then pulled out a handgun and shot himself. There is no indication that the officer fired any shots during the incident.

The subject was pronounced dead at the scene. Ashland PD then requested the Nebraska State Patrol to investigate the incident. By Nebraska State Statute, this will be a grand jury investigation. That investigation is ongoing.
