Pressey, Petersen WMAs to reopen Aug. 1

Pressey and Petersen wildlife management areas, temporarily closed because of wildfires, will reopen to public access Aug. 1. Properties enrolled in Open Fields and Waters within the impacted areas also will reopen.

Pressey WMA in Custer County was closed after wildfire broke out there April 22. Peterson WMA in Sioux County was closed June 9 when the South Fork Fire broke out in the Pine Ridge.

Clear Creek WMA remains closed until further notice due to wildfire effects.

Areas that are reopening may have had boundary fences damaged. The fences are in different stages of being rebuilt and will be marked with signs.

Nebraska Game and Parks encourages the public to recreate responsibly to reduce the risk of wildfire. More than 60% of the state in in severe drought. For tips on fire safety, visit OutdoorNebraska.gov and search “Fire Safety.”
