Red Willow, Swanson now offering camping reservations

Red Willow Reservoir and Swanson Reservoir state recreation areas have been added to Nebraska Game and Parks’ camping reservation system.

Starting at 9 a.m. Central time May 15, guests can make reservations for arrivals as early as May 16 for 50% of campsites in the two parks in southwestern Nebraska.

Reservations will be accepted at OutdoorNebraska.gov or by calling 402-471-1414 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday.

Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance and through 2 p.m. the day before arrival. The remaining 50% of campsites at both parks are first-come, first-served.

“This change will provide more options for guests, some of whom want to travel to explore new places with the security of knowing they’ll have a place to stay while others prefer last-minute stays close to home,” said Jeff Fields, Parks Division administrator at Game and Parks. “This change accommodates both styles of campers.”

As with all of Nebraska state parks, all areas with reservable campsites become first-come, first-serve sites during nonpeak season.

Red Willow Reservoir SRA is known for its camping and water recreation, as well as for its fishing. In addition to campgrounds and a 1,600-acre lake, the state recreation area offers an archery range, a marina, picnicking areas and a playground.

Swanson Reservoir SRA offers the largest reservoir in the area and offers excellent fishing, boating, camping, swimming and sandy beaches, among other activities. It also has a marina.

Both parks make a perfect retreat for families, anglers, and nature lovers looking to explore the beauty of Nebraska’s Republican River Valley.
