Sack’s Big Day Propels GISH Past Waverly


(Lincoln, NE) - Grayson Sack drove in four runs on three hits to lead Grand Island past Waverly, 14-4, on Saturday in the final game of the Lincoln East tournament. Sack hit a home run to left field in the first scoring two, singled in the fourth, scoring one, and tripled in the fifth, scoring one.

Waverly opened the scoring in the first after Colt Kerchal doubled, scoring two runs.

Sack homered to left field following a 7-pitch at-bat, which helped Grand Island tie the game at two in the bottom of the first.

Waverly took the lead in the top of the second. Crew Verkamp hit a solo home run to left field, to give Waverly the lead, 3-2.

Sam Schroeder singled down the left field line, which helped Grand Island tie the game at three in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third inning, Grand Island went back into the lead after Gavin Ruether doubled down the left field line, and Waverly committed an error, each scoring one run.

Grand Island scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ian Arends grounded out, scoring one run, Schroeder doubled, scoring two runs, and Gabe Ruiz doubled, scoring two runs.

Sack earned the win for Grand Island. The starting pitcher gave up eight hits and four runs (three earned) over six innings, striking out five and walking three. Cy Dewing took the loss for Waverly Vikings Varsity 2026. The starter went three innings, surrendering six runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out two and walking one.

Grand Island tallied 16 hits in the game. Ruether, Sack, Schroeder, and Ruiz each collected three hits for Grand Island.

Kerchal drove the middle of the lineup, leading Waverly with two runs batted in. The catcher went 1-for-3 on the day. Verkamp, Waverly Vikings Varsity 2026's number eight hitter, led the team with two hits in two at-bats.


Next up for Grand Island (15-7) is a game against Lincoln Southwest on Thursday.
