Dream big, and have goals was the message sent by Boston Celtic NBA player Baylor Scheierman to kids at the Epic Discovery Center Tuesday in Grand Island during their Meet Your Heroes Camp.Scheierman, a native of Aurora Nebraska, told kids that even kids from small town Nebraska can hit the big time.

“I am from a town of 4,000 people and now play in the NBA,” said Scheierman. “It’s about setting goals and working hard to achieve them,” he said. “When I was little I probably didn’t think it was going to ever happen (becoming a pro athlete) but here I am.

Scheierman told Central Nebraska Today that from an early age, he knew what he wanted to get done.

“That was the biggest thing I did as a kid,” said Scheierman. “There were things I wanted to go after and I went after them.” He added that it may not always work out the way you had hoped but you should still aim high.“Having goals, and having dreams is big.”

From the littler campers in kindergarten through fourth grade, to the high school aged ones, these Epic kids knew about basketball, and even more so, knew about Baylor and his professional career.

Scheierman was talking to the elementary aged Heroes campers at Epic Discovery Center, and he started to mention his best game statistically against Orlando on April 12, and before he could say how many points he scored that night, one camper, Lincoln Kingsley shouted out,” You had 30 points,” to which Scheierman agreed and smiled, and finished his story.

In the high school aged camp, Scheierman talked to the room full of Grand Island basketball boys from all four high schools about controlling what you can control in life, and participating in multiple sports.

“I played basketball, football, baseball, and golf growing up,” he said, “I think it gives you a good skill set and work ethic doing multiple sports,” he told the campers.

Scheierman also talked about consistency, and how a routine has been key to his NBA career.“During the season I am consistent with what I do daily,” he told the campers. “ It is important to keep with it every day.”

Grand Island Lutheran High school sophomore basketball player Josh Olson said that message stuck with him.

“When he (Scheierman) talked about being consistent in exercising and routine, that made sense and is something I will remember.” Olson said he also takes to heart Scheierman’s message about making sacrifices to achieve your goals.“He talked about practicing basketball and sticking to our goals even if that meant missing out on hanging out with friends, and other events sometimes.”

Olson said meeting Scheierman, whose career he follows, was amazing.

“It’s probably the coolest thing I have ever done in life,” he said.

Scheierman said he has gained more playing time in his first two seasons in the NBA and that even if he doesn’t start all the time, he knows to be ready and willing to do what needs to be done when called upon.

“Control what I can control and be ready at all times,” he stated.

After speaking to the campers Scheierman held a meet-and-greet session with the public at the facility.Scheierman said entering season three in the NBA he has his eyes on continuing to improve his skills.“I want to continue to work on ball handling,” he said, “And to continue to finish around the rim with my touch.”

“I want to be in constant rotation,” he said.

Scheierman and the Celtics will start the regular season in October.
