SCOOPS continues Nebraska State Fair tradition
GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA (August 26, 2025) Nebraska State Fair-goers are encouraged to order some philanthropy with their fair food.
At SCOOPS Ice Cream Parlor, every cone, cup and coffee float comes with a side of giving back. What makes SCOOPS unique? The volunteers behind the counter get to choose where the proceeds go — Heartland United Way or one of its 20 community partner agencies. Many of those community partners put on the cap and apron themselves to scoop for their cause.
Last year, SCOOPS volunteers served up more than 12,200 cones, cups and coffee floats, logging nearly 800 volunteer hours and raising more than $32,400 during the Nebraska State Fair alone.
This year the parlor features a new mascot: HUWie the Penguin, who was named by HUW Facebook follower Jeri Jaixen. HUWie will be roaming the fair, highlighting how fair-goers can give back, take action and get involved long after the rides roll out.
For the first time, you’ll also be able to get sprinkles with your impact. SCOOPS will be offering a scoop of vanilla ice cream with patriotic sprinkles for $2.50 on September 1, as part of the Nebraska State Fair’s 250th celebration of America.
Every scoop supports efforts that improve the lives of individuals and families across Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick Counties — creating youth opportunity, strengthening financial security and building healthy, resilient communities.
Volunteers are still needed for the Nebraska State Fair as well as Aksarben Stock Show. Go to Go2Volunteer.org to sign up for a shift. The Parlor is also open during select shows on the Fonner Park grounds throughout the year.
